They wrote “Release Siarhiej Kavalienka!” next to the court building.
Imprisoned opposition activist Siarhiej Kavalienka's wife and cousin were arrested near the building of the Viciebsk Regional Court early on May 18.
Aliena Kavalienka and the unnamed male cousin of Mr. Kavalienka, as well as Aliena Siemienchukova, a member of an opposition group called European Belarus, were apprehended and accused of chalking “Release Siarhiej Kavalienka!” on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse, human rights defenders said.
The regional court was expected to continue hearing the 37-year-old Kavalienka's appeal against his prison sentence on Friday.
Meanwhile, human rights defender Paviel Levinau has petitioned the regional court to uphold Mr. Kavalienka's appeal and order his release. A list of irregularities observed by human rights defenders during Mr. Kavalienka's trial in the Pershamajski District Court is attached to the petition.
Siarhiej Kavalienka, a member of the Conservative Christian Party, was sentenced to a suspended three-year prison sentence in 2010 for putting a white-red-white flag on top of Viciebsk's tallest Christmas tree in early January.
