Lukashenka Jr.

A boy born with a golden gun in his hand.

Mikalaj Lukashenka — usually called Kolia Lukashenka in Belarus — is probably the most well known boy all around the country.

He became famous as his father, who is given most of country’s media space, started taking the son with him.

However, rich in media coverage, Lukashenka’s younger son’s life is shrouded in mystery. In spite of Kolia’s public life, a bunch of rumors is the only thing Belarusians and the world know about the boy.

However, Lukashenka does not conceals the fact his younger son is an extramarital one.

“Well, he was born the wrong way [not from his spouse], but who cares. He is my son and I do not reject him. I could have hid him, but I do not want to do this. Children are the gifts of God,” Lukashenka said during the press conference.

However, the boy constantly accompanying his father was never seen with his mother. There is also no official information, but his mother is considered to be Iryna Abielskaja, Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s ex-physician.

Kolia Lukashenka was undisclosed for public when he was 4 and has been in focus since then. However, the role of Kolia is far from the role of any president’s son. Obama’s daughters grow plants near the White House and walk the dog, Bo. But Kolia is different. Not every first lady may boast of attending the meetings at such events as Lukashenka Jr. does.

Usually it is few shots in an airport and presenting at an official dinner. Yet, Kolia goes much further.

If his father allows him — and he usually does — Kolia partakes the military manoeuvres, reviews the parades travels all around the world.

In his 8 years, Kolia has been to Beijing Olympics, has attended the CIS summit, meet the Pope. And not just arrived with his father at the destinations, but sat next to him: in a chair or on his knees.

Many call Lukashenka’s upbringing methods minimum ‘controversial.’ The deprivation of mother’s attention is probably the most insignificant moment that may be voiced. Looking at a small skinny boy who wears commander uniform, shoulder straps and who is saluted by all country’s generals it is hard to believe he is just his father’s fellow. He seems to be much beyond this.

Lukashenka has noted he want to make a real man from his son. He takes him to sauna and they do sports together. However, real men must love arms, too.

The recent visit of Aliaksandr Lukashenka — who was accompanied by his son — to Cuba made the Internet community to take out old photos of Kolia Lukashenka bearing a golden gun in a holster. It was taken in 2009, during the Russia–Belarus military maneuvers Zapad 2009 [West 2009].

Kolia was together with his father, both were dressed in camouflage. The boy’s belt was decorated with holster and enormously big — compared to small Kolia himself — golden pistol grip was looking out of the holster.

Mr. Medvedev, then the president of Russia, was also present that day. He, unlike the Belarusian colleague, was civil dressed in short leather jacket and jeans.

“It a good gun as it is Russia’s President present... Is not loaded yet,” Aliaksandr Lukashenka said when Medvedev was examining the pistol.

The pistol is said to be presented to Aliaksandr Lukashenka by Dmitry Medvedev when in Sochi. Then, probably, it was passed to Kolia: it is unlikely that Medvedev who strived to look democratic and European-like could have presented a small boy with the gun.

However, it is all not about a gun, even the golden one.

The Lukashenkas — the family of the father and three sons — are firmly holding the power in Belarus. Aliaksandr Lukashenka is the President. Viktar Lukashenka, the older son, became the president’s aide on national security. The middle son — Dzmitry Lukashenka — is the chairperson of organization Presidential Sports Club which is one of the founders of almost all lotteries in the country.

However, Kolia Lukashenka is the only son paid so much attention by his father. During a press conference, Aliaksandr Lukashenka highlighted that he was not preparing his sons to be the successors to the presidency. However, he mentioned that “it is impossible to gain characteristics of a president without unborn strength” during the very same conference.

In his opinion, such person “will only be a manager employed by people.”

No one knows what future Lukashenka’s preparing for his son now. Yet, golden pistols and parade uniform makes it hard to believe Lukashenka wants his son to be a simple “manager.”
