Photographer Surapin was arrested on July 13. Realtor Siarhiej Basharymau got to prison even earlier: on July 6.
Anton Surapin, 20, a journalism student, photographer and the editor of bnp.by who was the first to upload the photos of teddy bears dropped by two Swedish pilots on Ivianiec and Minsk on July 4, has been imprisoned in the KGB remand prison for a month.
Realtor Siarhiej Basharymau, 26, who is said to rent apartments to the organizers of the ‘bear bombing’ was captured by the KGB even earlier, on August 6.
The KGB brought official charges against Surapin and Basharymau on August 7. The two males are currently charged with Criminal Code’s article 371, part 3: assistance to illegally cross state’s border. In accordance with the corresponding article, they may be sentenced up to 7 years in prison.
On August 10, The KGB sent an official notice to the organizers of the bear drop Thomas Mazetti and Hannah Lina Frey urging them to appear for participation in investigation within 10 days. They were also asked to have an ID on them.
More than 30 Belarusian journalists participated in the action of solidarity with Anton Surapin. The journalists had photos with a teddy bear dropped on July 4 saying “You screwed up, you answer! Release the journalist.” However, on August 9 photographer Julija Darashkievich and journalist Iryna Kozlik were arrested when making photos for the solidarity series. They were charged with unauthorized picketing and fined with ca. $360 each. Before the court trial, the two journalists had to spend a night in the remand prison.
