Belarus is forced to join the World Trade Organization, as the President Aliaksandr Lukashenka stated during his working trip to Minsk Region on August 21. According to the President, life itself urges Belarus to run a massive program, which will allow the country to join the WTO on more favorable terms.
“Tomorrow we will be in the WTO. Russia, that giant, has already smashed into it. Are you saying that we will fence ourselves off?” said the President, as reported by REGNUM-Belarus.
As the head of the state announced, Belarus already has her foot in the door joining the WTO and the country has no choice but “to be ahead of the game”.
“We have no backup: we have no oil, no gas, and no gold. This is our gold,” – said the President pointing at a dairy farm.
At that he demanded that Belarusian farms’ cost recovery would not exceed three years. “That’s it: otherwise I won’t visit you, and you won’t sound off to me!” stressed Aliaksandr Lukashenka.
The main obstruction in the negotiations on Belarus joining the WTO is its complicated relations with the EU, as was stated by the Trade Minister of the Eurasian Economic Commission Andrej Slepnev on June 26.
