Appointed by the Stakeholders Meeting and responsible to the Institute’ board, the academic director holds the top executive position at the Institute, leads implementation of the Institute’s strategy and is responsible, together with the administrative director, for the overall effective functioning of the Institute and fulfillment of its plans and strategies.

Academic director will perform the following major duties:

a) Coordinates activities with the administrative director to harmonize implementation of plans and strategies from academic and administrative viewpoints;

b) Represents the Institute in relations with stake-holders, donors, media, and the public

c) Reports to the stakeholders meeting and the board for the academic content of the Institute’s activity;

d) Selects the academic personnel of the Institute for recommendation of the board;

e) Organizes preparation of academic plans and drafting institute’s strategy. Reports to the board on their implementation;

f) Ensures programmatic integration of various Institute programs, such as research, public policy platform, BISS yearbook, fellowship, etc.;

g) Plans, coordinates, and supervises the development of the research program of the Institute;

h) Plans the development of public policy platform, training and outreach activities of the institute, decides on the content and participants of the events;

i) Oversees the production books, articles, policy papers, op-eds written by Institute’s staff, design and enforce academic standards for publications, responsible for quality control;

j) Oversees the fundraising from the academic viewpoint;

k) Oversees the academic content of the Institute’s website;

l) Mentors, together with BISS analysts, the Institute’s fellows, BPPF fellows, other participants of the BISS research and public policy programs who are not directly affiliated with the Institute.

Job requirements:

Hold advanced degree (PhD or candidate or equivalent) in social sciences. Candidates with a degree from a recognized Western university will have preference in consideration. Candidates at the last stage of PhD work (dissertation written but not defended) will also be considered;

Have at least five year experience of work at the academic department or public policy institute. Candidates with combined university and think tank experience will have preference;

Be fluent (able to communicate freely, write academic publications, proofread, translate from and to) in Belarusian, Russian, and English. Additional foreign languages are a plus but not a requirement;

Demonstrate her/his academic credentials by at least 2 academic publications in recognized international scholarly publications;

Have at least 2 year experience in project management and fundraising;

Be able to provide references from at least 3 recognized scholars and practitioners to confirm credentials of the applicant;

Have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to work under stressful environment.
